Hi! My name is Christian Rafetto, and I love books! I've worked in traditional publishing for over a decade, serving in a variety of roles including: graphic design, content marketing, and acquisitions.
In 2023 I left my office job at a traditional publisher and started my own book design agency. I also run a small publishing imprint. I specialize in book covers and typesetting, though I also have lots of experience curating content for blog- and video-posts, building websites (using drag-and-drop web builders), and editing podcasts and videos.
I've followed Rabbit Room for many years, and share a similar passion for producing thoughtful, Kingdom-minded content for Christians who revel in the grandeur of God's beauty and goodness.
My wife and I have five children. We make our homestead in the Appalachian mountains of Pennsylvania.
Why am I interested in the position?
I love being self-employed, but it can be a bit isolating. This part-time internship position would allow me to continue to run my business, while also connecting with a broader community of like-minded artists and thinkers, working with content that I feel passionate about. I also hope to build friendships with more folks in Christian publishing.
Some things I've designed/built…
• I've designed hundreds of book covers. Here are some of my favorites.
• I founded and run a small publishing company, focusing on Middle Grade and YA fiction.
• As a publisher I regularly evaluate content, helpings authors to refine their work and ultimately bring it to market. Here are two books I'm especially proud of: The Traveling Piano Man of Fort Whettershire by Victoria Murgante, and Forward. Heel. Park. by Judy Redlich.
• I host a podcast called Book Folk (I even had a chance to interview Ned Bustard).
• From 2006-2023, I curated all content, built and maintained the website, and ran all email marketing campaigns for Destiny Image Publishers
What kinds of art are you in to?
• I especially love simple graphic images. Lately, I've been very influenced by the paper-cut artwork of Saul Bass and the stark, black and white images made by many printmakers. You can see those influences on my work here.
• I'm a huge fan of children's book artists like Pauline Baynes, Ludwig Bemelmans, Shel Silverstein, and Tolkien's illustrations.
• I love art deco, pen-and-ink drawings, paintings by the dutch masters, and lots of classic artwork. Here's are some art pieces I've curated over the years.
What would people who know you say you are good at? Bad at?
My clients say I'm good at graphic design. My friends say I'm good at asking questions. My brother-in-law says I'm good at making mix CDs. My kids say I'm good at reading out loud. My wife says I'm good at cooking and that I should do it more often.
I'm terrible at painting, being witty, finishing whole books, and saying "no."
Back Cover Description for
'The Art of Slapping: The Christian Rafetto Story'
'The Art of Slapping: The Christian Rafetto Story'
In this inspired collection of essays, Christian Rafetto shares more than glimpses into his captivating personal story; he unlocks the secrets of his creative genius. Eyes will glaze at his encomium on the subtle art of placing pixels on a screen. Hearts will swell at his romantic defense for covering Radiohead songs badly. Mouths will water at the description of each fantasy item on the menu of his fictitious food truck. Listeners to the audiobook (read by the author) will be astounded by how convincing his use of only three accents is for such a vast cast of characters. But mostly, readers will finish the book with a deeper appreciation of the beauty in the mundane, humdrum, and day-to-day.
What are your three favorite business books?
I'm not a huge reader of business books, however, I really appreciate Donald Miller's 'Building a Story Brand' and 'How to Grow Your Small Business'. I also like Chandler Bolt's 'Published.'
